President Mahama calls for unity, urges Ghanaians to shun division and intolerance
President John Dramani Mahama has appealed to Ghanaians to preserve the country’s enduring culture of peaceful coexistence, warning against division, extremism, and intolerance.
Addressing congregants at Independence Square during Eid al-Fitr prayers on Friday, March 20, the president reaffirmed Ghana’s reputation as a country where people of different faiths and cultures live in harmony.
“Fellow citizens, Ghana continues to stand as a shining example of peaceful coexistence. Our diversity of faith and culture is not a weakness; it is rather our strength,” he said.
He pointed to the strong bonds between religious groups in the country, noting that mutual participation in celebrations and traditions has helped sustain national unity.
“Muslims and Christians celebrate each other’s holy days, we participate in each other’s ceremonies, and we coexist as one people. This harmony is a precious gift, and we must protect it,” he stressed.
President Mahama further urged citizens to remain vigilant against influences that could disrupt the nation’s peace, encouraging a collective commitment to dialogue and understanding.
“Let us reject anything that will divide us. Let us reject extremism and intolerance. Let us choose dialogue over discord, unity over division, and peace over conflict,” the President stated.
He emphasised that maintaining unity is essential for Ghana’s progress, calling on citizens to continue upholding values of tolerance, respect, and togetherness.
