A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formally petitioned the party’s General Secretary, calling for disciplinary action against former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, over what he describes as conduct that threatens party cohesion and undermines efforts to rebuild ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The petition, submitted on June 18 by Charles Opoku, Deputy National TESCON Coordinator for the New Juaben South Constituency, accuses Agyapong of consistently making public remarks that target fellow party members and contradict the party’s official positions.

According to Mr. Opoku, such actions have damaged the NPP’s public image and run contrary to provisions of the party’s constitution, which require members to uphold loyalty and protect the party’s reputation.

A key issue highlighted in the petition relates to Agyapong’s recent comments on the Afari Military Hospital project. The petitioner contends that the former presidential aspirant unfairly criticised the NPP Minority Caucus and made claims that misrepresented the party’s role in advancing the project.

The petition also draws attention to “The Base,” a political support group associated with Agyapong that emerged following the NPP’s presidential primaries. Mr. Opoku argues that the activities of the group outside the party’s recognised structures have created unease among members and could weaken the authority of established party organs.

Another concern raised relates to comments reportedly made by Agyapong during a media interview, where he was alleged to have suggested he possessed sensitive party information and could disclose it at a later date.

The petitioner claims such statements have generated uncertainty within the party and among its supporters, particularly reports suggesting Agyapong may withhold support for the NPP in the lead-up to the 2028 elections.

Mr. Opoku further argued that any information relating to alleged wrongdoing, corruption or misconduct should be presented to the appropriate party bodies or state institutions rather than being referenced publicly without action.

He has therefore urged the National Executive Committee and other relevant party structures to examine the attached materials, including media reports and interview transcripts, and determine whether disciplinary measures are warranted.

The petition comes at a time when the NPP is undertaking internal reorganisation and rebuilding efforts following its loss in the 2024 general elections.
