Sophia Akuffo resigns from Council of State, President Mahama accepts decision
Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo is no longer a member of the Council of State after President John Dramani Mahama formally accepted her resignation.
The development was confirmed on Monday, June 15, by Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
According to Mr Kwakye Ofosu, Justice Akuffo submitted a resignation letter to the President in September 2025, expressing her intention to step down from the Council of State. He said she did not state the reasons for her decision.
The Minister explained that although the President was required to accept the resignation, the process was delayed after the Council of State requested time to engage Justice Akuffo to determine whether any concerns could be addressed to persuade her to remain.
He said the Council later informed the President that its engagements had not changed her position and advised that the resignation be accepted.
“As far as they were concerned, the resignation could be accepted. So, the President has formally accepted her resignation, and she is no longer a member of the Council of State,” Mr Kwakye Ofosu said.
Justice Akuffo served as Chief Justice from 2017 until her retirement in 2020 and was later appointed to the Council of State as one of the President’s nominees.
Her resignation creates a vacancy on the constitutional advisory body.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu said the process to appoint a replacement has already begun in accordance with constitutional requirements and that an announcement will be made in due course.
