Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has confirmed that Ghana's diplomatic mission in The Hague is providing consular assistance to Asante Akim North MP Oheneba Kwame Frimpong, who remains in detention in the Netherlands following a United States extradition request.

Addressing the media, Ablakwa said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had closely monitored the matter since the MP was detained by Dutch immigration authorities at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam on May 10, 2026, under a U.S. extradition order.

According to the minister, Ghana's mission in the Hague immediately intervened after the detention and has since been working with the MP's family, legal representatives and the relevant Dutch authorities to ensure his rights are fully protected throughout the legal process.

Ablakwa disclosed that he personally visited Oheneba Kwame Frimpong on May 24, 2026, during a consular visit to the Hague, where he assessed his condition and held discussions with both the MP and his legal team.

“I can confirm that on the 24th of May 2026, I personally paid the Honorable MP a consular visit in The Hague,” he said.

The Foreign Affairs Minister added that the MP appeared to be in good condition during their meeting and expressed confidence that the necessary diplomatic support was being provided.

He further revealed that during a courtesy call by the Dutch Minister for Justice and Security, David Van Weel, on July 21, 2026, he raised the issue directly with his Dutch counterpart.

According to Ablakwa, the Dutch minister assured him that the Netherlands would uphold due process and ensure that the rights of the Ghanaian legislator are respected throughout the extradition proceedings.

The minister said the government remains hopeful that the legal process will be conducted fairly and wished the MP well as he contests the extradition request.

Reaffirming Ghana's commitment to protecting its citizens abroad, Ablakwa stressed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not discriminate when offering consular services to Ghanaians facing difficulties overseas.

“As we have always demonstrated, regardless of background, political persuasion, creed or place of birth, once you are Ghanaian, the Foreign Ministry and our missions abroad will always extend consular support,” he stated.

He added that every Ghanaian facing distress abroad is entitled to consular assistance, regardless of the circumstances surrounding their situation, emphasizing that the ministry will continue to provide such support without discrimination.
