One fatally struck in armed ambush on passenger bus near Nasia
A violent armed attack on a passenger bus on Saturday, May 2, 2026, has resulted in the death of one person and injuries to five others.
The incident involved a vehicle with registration number AS 4941-25, which was traveling from Zebilla in the Upper East Region toward Tamale in the Northern Region.
The vehicle was caught in an ambush at Nasia, located near Walewale in the North East Region.
According to preliminary reports and eyewitness accounts, gunmen emerged from thickets along the roadside and opened fire indiscriminately to force the bus to stop.
The initial gunfire pierced the body of the vehicle, fatally striking one passenger who died at the scene. Five additional passengers sustained varying degrees of injury from direct gunfire and shattered glass.
These victims were evacuated to a nearby hospital for emergency medical care, while the body of the deceased has been deposited at a local mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
North East Regional Police Public Relations Officer ASP Robert Anibiik confirmed the attack to MyJoyOnline but was unable to provide a comprehensive update on total casualties at the time of publication.
The police have urged residents and transport operators to remain vigilant as forensic and field investigations continue.
The incident follows long-standing concerns raised by commuters and transport operators regarding the safety of northern highways after sunset.
