The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, has disclosed that recent heavy rains affected more than 60 communities in the Volta Region, while flooding in the Western North Region displaced over 1,200 residents.

Presenting an update to Parliament on Tuesday, June 30, on the impact of the floods and government's response, the Minister said the flooding in the Volta Region was widespread but did not result in life-threatening situations.

According to him, more than 60 communities across several districts experienced varying degrees of flooding, prompting emergency response agencies to monitor developments and provide assistance to affected residents.

Mr. Muntaka told Parliament that Keta recorded seven affected communities, Anlo, Ketu South, Ketu North and Agotime-Ziope each recorded six, while South Tongu had eight. Akatsi recorded nine affected communities, Ho Municipality eight, Central Tongu three and Adaklu and North Tongu recorded two communities each.

The Interior Minister said government agencies have been working with local authorities to coordinate relief efforts and assess the needs of residents affected by the floods.

He also highlighted the situation in the Western North Region, where flooding submerged parts of Samreboi and nearby communities, forcing more than 1,200 people to leave their homes.

Mr. Muntaka assured Parliament that the government, through the relevant emergency response institutions, is continuing to deliver relief to affected communities while conducting assessments to determine the full extent of the damage caused by the flooding.

Several parts of the country continue to deal with the aftermath of the heavy rains, with emergency services engaged in rescue operations, evacuations and support for residents whose homes and properties have been affected.
