The National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has formally announced his bid for the position of National First Vice Chairman, promising to help rebuild the party through stronger leadership, discipline and unity ahead of the 2028 general elections.

In a declaration issued on July 20, 2026, Mr. Ahiagbah said the party's ongoing reorganisation presents an opportunity to reflect on its defeat in the 2024 elections and chart a new course for the future.

He noted that the NPP must use the lessons from the election setback to renew its core principles, strengthen its internal structures and foster greater unity among members.

According to him, the party's ability to regain power will depend on restoring discipline within its ranks, arguing that organisational cohesion and electoral success can only be achieved through effective leadership and collective purpose.

Mr. Ahiagbah also reaffirmed his commitment to the NPP's founding ideals, including the promotion of individual liberty, the rule of law and free-market policies, describing them as central to the party's identity.

If elected, he said his leadership will focus on reinforcing the party's organisational structures, promoting accountability, encouraging inclusiveness and working closely with the National Chairman to prepare the NPP for the 2028 elections.

He further pledged to ensure that party members at all levels feel involved in decision-making while strengthening grassroots mobilisation across the country.

Mr. Ahiagbah acknowledged that many Ghanaians are looking for leaders who demonstrate integrity, discipline and the ability to unite people, insisting that he possesses those qualities and is ready to serve in the role.

He appealed to delegates to support his candidature when they go to the polls during the party's national delegates conference later this year.

His announcement sets the stage for a keen contest for the National First Vice Chairman position, with the NPP's National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, also seeking the position.

Nana B has argued that his more than two decades of service to the party have equipped him with the experience needed to strengthen the NPP's structures and reconnect with its grassroots support base.

The NPP is expected to elect a new national executive from September 18 to 20, 2026, as part of efforts to reorganise the party following its 2024 electoral defeat and position it for the 2028 presidential and parliamentary elections.
