The government may terminate the contract awarded to Volta Impex Construction for the construction of the 32-kilometre Techiman–Nkonsia–Wenchi road if the company fails to demonstrate an immediate commitment to accelerating work.

The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, expressed frustration over the contractor’s slow progress, saying the company had repeatedly failed to meet construction targets despite several warnings from the Ghana Highway Authority.

According to the Minister, work on the project, which should have reached between 15 and 20 per cent completion by now, remains at just six per cent.

Mr Agbodza issued the warning when he inspected the project as part of an ongoing tour of road infrastructure works across the Bono, Bono East, Upper West, Upper East and Northern Regions.

He said the government would no longer allow contractors to hold up critical road projects, particularly after receiving substantial mobilisation funds.

The contractor received GH¢66 million in May to mobilise to site and speed up construction, but the Minister said the level of activity on the project does not justify the amount paid.

“The contractor has not demonstrated sufficient commitment to completing the project. Mobilisation funds have been released, yet the contractor is not on site. We will take a firm decision on Monday, September 7,” Mr Agbodza stated.

He said the fate of the contract would be determined after a meeting with the contractor scheduled for Monday, September 7.
