Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has expressed confidence ahead of a crucial United Nations (UN) vote on Ghana’s resolution seeking to affirm the transatlantic slave trade as a crime against humanity.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, March 26, 2026, the minister indicated that Ghana is “on the cusp of victory,” pointing to what he described as strong global solidarity in support of justice.

He noted that the outcome of the vote would be significant in restoring the dignity and humanity of Africans and their ancestors affected by the transatlantic slave trade.

According to him, the resolution seeks to affirm what “cannot be denied, twisted or silenced” - that the transatlantic slave trade remains one of the gravest crimes against humanity.

The vote at the United Nations is expected to draw international attention as countries deliberate on issues of historical accountability, reparatory justice and recognition of past injustices.

Ghana has been at the forefront of global advocacy for reparatory justice, aligning with calls from African states and the diaspora for acknowledgment and redress over the legacy of slavery.
