Traders demand urgent gov't action over stalled Odawna drainage project
Traders at the Odawna Market in the Greater Accra Region have staged a demonstration, calling on government and the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly to urgently complete the long-delayed Circle–Odawna drainage project.
The traders described the current drainage situation at the market as a “death trap,” warning that the area becomes heavily flooded whenever it rains, posing serious risks to lives and businesses.
Speaking to the media, the Odawna Market Queen Mother, Diana Adjei Kotey, appealed to authorities—including the government, the Member of Parliament for the area, and the Municipal Assembly—to expedite work on the drainage system ahead of the rainy season.
“We are appealing to them to finish the Odawna drainage before we enter the rainy season,” she urged.
According to her, the persistent flooding has significantly affected trading activities, with some shop owners forced to shut down operations due to declining sales and their inability to service high-interest loans.
Other traders echoed similar concerns, expressing frustration over the prolonged delay and its impact on their livelihoods.
They urged authorities to prioritize the completion of the drainage project to prevent further disruptions and safeguard the market.
The demonstrators warned that failure to act promptly could worsen conditions during the peak of the rainy season, further threatening businesses and public safety in the area.
