The Ghana Education Service (GES) says government has released funds for the purchase of perishable food items for senior high schools amid concerns about possible shortages.

GES Public Relations Head, Daniel Fenyi, speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story, explained that school food supply is divided into perishables and non-perishables. He said non-perishable items such as rice and grains, supplied through the National Food Buffer Stock Company, are available in adequate quantities.

He acknowledged challenges with perishable items due to delays in fund releases, noting that these items are procured by schools and cannot be stored for long periods.

Mr Fenyi stated that the full amount for perishables has now been released and is with GES for onward transfer, with school accounts expected to be credited by the next day or by the end of the week.

This follows concerns raised by the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools that some schools risked closure due to food shortages. He maintained that schools will not shut down, citing available non-perishables as a buffer.

He added that a detailed statement on the disbursed amounts will be issued, assuring that students will not go hungry and schools will not be forced to close.
