Nearly 30% of gas cylinders unfit for use – GCMC raises safety concerns
The Ghana Cylinder Manufacturing Company (GCMC) has revealed that close to 30 percent of gas cylinders submitted for refurbishment under the Cylinder Recirculation Model are unfit for use, raising significant safety concerns.
Managing Director of GCMC, Abdul-Rahman Mankir, called on the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) to accelerate the full nationwide rollout of the policy to enhance safety standards in the distribution and use of gas cylinders.
The disclosure was made during a visit by Parliament’s Energy Committee to the company’s facility.
Members of the Committee expressed concern over operational challenges facing GCMC, particularly delays in securing financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance.
Chairman of the Committee and Member of Parliament for Ho West, Emmanuel Bedzrah, indicated that the Committee would formally engage the Finance Ministry to expedite the necessary approvals to support the company’s activities.
The Ranking Member on the Committee, George Kwame Aboagye, also urged increased government backing for GCMC, stressing that strengthening the company’s operations could improve safety while creating additional employment opportunities.
The Cylinder Recirculation Model is a key policy aimed at improving safety in the handling and distribution of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) across the country.
