VRA opens 33-unit biodigester toilet facility in Fakpoe to tackle open defecation

In a major boost to sanitation efforts in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region, Volta River Authority (VRA) has opened a 33-unit stand-alone biodigester toilet facility for the Fakpoe community.
Constructed at a cost of GH₵330,000, the facility is expected to significantly reduce open defecation and combat sanitation-related diseases in the area.
The project forms part of VRA’s broader Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) agenda aimed at promoting sustainable development in host communities.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Director of Real Estate at VRA, Mr. Patrick Mireku, who represented the Authority’s Chief Executive Officer, explained that the initiative was borne out of a thorough needs assessment, which identified poor sanitation and widespread open defecation as key challenges in Fakpoe.
He encouraged residents to take full ownership of the facility, ensuring its proper use and maintenance to preserve its long-term impact.
The District Chief Executive for North Tongu, Victoria Amefadzi Yawa Doe, commended the intervention, describing it as a transformative project that not only addresses sanitation but also enhances public health and community dignity.
Chief of Fakpoe, Torgbe Yao Gbeve II, expressed heartfelt appreciation to the VRA, noting that the facility would serve as a lasting legacy and improve the overall quality of life for residents.
