The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has led residents of Sogakope, Abor and Akatsi in the two-day National General Cleaning Exercise initiated by President John Dramani Mahama under the theme, "Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana After the Floods."

The exercise brought together residents, security services, waste management agencies and other stakeholders to undertake a massive clean-up campaign aimed at restoring environmental sanitation in communities affected by recent flooding.

Across the three districts, participants worked collectively to desilt drains, clear refuse from public spaces and clean streets and markets. The exercise formed part of nationwide efforts to prevent disease outbreaks and promote environmental cleanliness in the aftermath of the floods.

Speaking during the exercise, Mr Gunu commended residents for their enthusiasm, commitment and sense of shared responsibility, describing their participation as a demonstration that collective action could help build cleaner, healthier and more resilient communities.

He urged residents to make environmental sanitation a daily civic responsibility rather than an occasional activity, stressing that maintaining clean surroundings is a shared duty that requires the active collaboration of government, traditional authorities, institutions and individual citizens.

To support sanitation efforts and strengthen community preparedness, the Volta Regional Co-ordinating Council donated wheelbarrows, Wellington boots and Aquatabs to the affected communities.

Mr Gunu expressed appreciation to the Chief Director of the Volta Regional Co-ordinating Council, Alhaji Mohammed Avorna Akape; the Volta Regional Director of Environmental Health, Madam Stella Kumedzro; the Volta Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr Pascal Agbagba; Municipal and District Chief Executives, security services and volunteers for their dedication and contributions towards the success of the exercise.

The Regional Minister noted that the clean-up campaign would continue with Day Two of the National General Cleaning Exercise as authorities seek to sustain the momentum and promote improved sanitation practices across the Volta Region.
