The government has amended the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023), to provide representation for private universities on the governing board of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu announced the amendment during the commissioning of a 200-bed hostel at Wisconsin International University College in Feyiase.

He said the GTEC governing board would soon be reconstituted to include a representative from Ghana's private tertiary institutions.

Mr Iddrisu commended the contribution of private universities to tertiary education, noting that institutions such as Wisconsin International University College have helped absorb qualified students who are unable to secure places in public universities.

He, however, urged both public and private institutions to prioritise access, relevance and quality in delivering higher education.

The Minister also expressed concern that some tertiary institutions were moving away from their core mandates and called on them to align their academic programmes with the country's workforce and socio-economic needs.

He further urged universities to equip students with the skills needed to respond to emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), while ensuring that its use enhances teaching, learning and academic productivity.

Mr Iddrisu said investing in young people through technology, research and entrepreneurship remains essential to Ghana's development.
