The Member of Parliament (MP) for Berekum West, Dickson Kyere-Duah, has called for renewed national commitment to environmental protection and climate action as Ghana joins the rest of the world in commemorating World Environment Day 2026.

Making a statement on the floor of Parliament, the lawmaker noted that this year’s theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future,” highlights the critical role of nature in addressing climate change and securing a sustainable future for generations to come.

According to him, climate change has become a pressing reality, with Ghana already experiencing rising temperatures, erratic rainfall patterns, droughts, floods, coastal erosion, and declining agricultural productivity. He warned that these challenges continue to threaten food security, water resources, and the livelihoods of vulnerable communities.

Mr Kyere-Duah stressed the need for greater investment in nature-based solutions, including forest restoration, wetland conservation, sustainable agriculture, biodiversity protection, and renewable energy development. He noted that such measures remain among the most effective and cost-efficient approaches to climate adaptation and mitigation.

The Berekum West MP commended Ghana’s ongoing environmental initiatives, including afforestation programmes, climate-smart agriculture projects, renewable energy investments, and methane-reduction strategies aimed at promoting environmental sustainability.

He further urged Parliament to strengthen environmental governance through effective legislation, oversight, and adequate resource allocation to support sustainable land use, responsible mining, waste management, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience.

Touching on international efforts, Mr Kyere-Duah highlighted recent discussions at the Inter-Parliamentary Union and a regional climate seminar in Kenya, where parliamentarians across Africa called for stronger legislative leadership, enhanced regional cooperation, and support for sustainable energy and agricultural systems.

The MP also underscored the importance of youth involvement in environmental protection, citing the establishment of Climate Action Clubs in Senior High Schools within his constituency to promote environmental awareness and stewardship among young people.

He further emphasized the need to reduce methane emissions from agriculture, energy, and waste management systems, describing methane as one of the most potent greenhouse gases contributing to global warming.

Mr Kyere-Duah concluded by urging government, Parliament, the private sector, civil society organizations, and citizens to work together to build a greener, more resilient, and environmentally sustainable Ghana.

“The future we seek depends on the actions we take today,” he stated.
