Galamsey: 22 arrested in Western Region

The Western Central Police Command has arrested 22 individuals for engaging in illegal mining activities in parts of the Western Region, including Dominase Nkwanta and Adjakaa Manso.
The arrests were made on April 8, 2025, during an intelligence-led operation aimed at curbing illegal mining, popularly known as "galamsey," in the region.
Addressing the media, the Deputy Western Central Regional Commander, ACP Bismark Agyapong, said the suspects include: Albert Adu Bonsra, 19; Stephen Kwakye, 20; Richard Atigah, 23; Yaw Menanyi, 19; Al-Mustapha Alidu, 26; Jutu Francis, 20; Hakitu Zibo, 20; Nana Yaw Boakye, 30; Kwesi Evans, 23; Isaac Cobby, 20; and Bashiru Ali, 23. The rest are Atta Francis, 20; Ayew Sali, 22; Fataw Gariba, 22; Kwame Emmanuel, 19; Kwesi Francis, 21; Abapor Frank, 20; Wasah Moses, 22; Bukari Haruna, 23; Abdulai Lukman, 21; Yeboah Rashid, 19; and Alkainu Hassan, 20.
During the operation, police recovered equipment believed to have been used in the illegal mining operations. These included 11 pumping machines, seven shovels, one pick-axe, and two chamfan machines.
ACP Agyapong revealed that the suspects have been arraigned before the Asankrangwa District Court and have been remanded into custody to assist with ongoing investigations.
He added that the case docket will be forwarded to the Attorney-General’s Department for further legal action and possible prosecution.
He used the opportunity to caution individuals involved in illegal mining to desist from the practice, emphasizing the government's unwavering commitment to fighting the menace.
“Anyone caught will face the full rigours of the law,” he warned.
