The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the arrest and subsequent death of two suspected armed robbers following an intelligence-led operation targeting a network linked to a series of roadblock attacks across parts of the country.

According to police, the operation was initiated after intelligence gathered by the Ashanti South Regional Command identified a key suspect, Sumaila Munkaila, also known as “Guda,” who was wanted in connection with multiple robberies along the Obuasi and Manso–Nyinahin stretch in the Ashanti Region and believed to be hiding in Tamale.

The suspect, aged 37, was arrested on April 25, 2026, at Vitin in Tamale.

During interrogation, he reportedly admitted involvement in several robberies, including attacks on the convoy of the Chiana-Pio, as well as incidents along the Buipe–Tamale and Yizesi–Fumbisi roads in April 2026.

He further identified alleged accomplices, leading police to arrest another suspect, Umaro Musah, at Savelugu later the same day.

Both suspects subsequently led police to a location near Yizesi in the Upper East Region, where they claimed weapons used in the robberies had been buried.

However, during a search operation on April 26, police said unknown gunmen opened fire from nearby bushes.

Officers returned fire in self-defence, during which the two suspects attempted to escape but sustained gunshot wounds. One police officer also sustained minor injuries and is receiving treatment.

Police reported that the assailants who initiated the gunfire managed to flee, although some are believed to have been injured.

A search of the area led to the recovery of several weapons, including an assault rifle, an AK-47, a pump-action gun, and a single-barrel gun, along with assorted ammunition.

Police also retrieved clothing believed to have been used during the robberies.

The injured suspects were rushed to the Tamale Government Hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival.

Their bodies are being transported to Bekwai for preservation and autopsy.

The Police Service says investigations are ongoing, with efforts intensified to apprehend other members of the suspected robbery network.
