Police Inspector jailed for life over murder of girl friend in Kumasi
The Kumasi High Court has sentenced Inspector Ahmed Twumasi, a police officer, to life imprisonment for the murder of his alleged girlfriend, Victoria Dapaah, popularly known as Maa Adwoa.
The tragic incident occurred on April 20, 2023, at Adum, Kumasi, where Inspector Twumasi was accused of fatally shooting the 27-year-old woman following a reported dispute.
Delivering judgment, the court found the accused guilty of murder, describing his actions as premeditated and unjustifiable, and ruled that he must serve a life sentence.
The case, which drew widespread public attention, sparked national outrage and renewed calls for greater accountability within the security services.
Prosecutors told the court that the police officer, attached to the Ashanti Regional SWAT Unit, used his service weapon to commit the crime after confronting the victim near the Dufie Towers building in Adum.
Following the incident, Inspector Twumasi fled the scene but was arrested days later at his hideout in Sekyere, near Effiduase in the Ashanti Region.
The sentencing brings closure to a case that shocked many Ghanaians and left the family of the late Maa Adwoa grieving deeply.
Family members and sympathisers who were present in court expressed mixed emotions — relief that justice had been served, but expressed sorrow that the life of a young woman had been cut short.
