Police arrest seven for hijacking fuel tanker in Greater Accra and Eastern Regions

The Ghana Police Service has arrested seven individuals in connection with the robbery of a 5,400-litre fuel tanker in an operation spanning the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions.
The suspects — Mark Abito, Shaibu Adams, Awini Ibrahim, Muniru Ayeba, Barnabas Atiga, and Abdullah Ganiu — were apprehended on 7th August 2025 during coordinated snap checks and intelligence-led raids.
According to police, the incident unfolded at around 12:30 a.m. when officers at the Ablekuma Borkorborkor checkpoint in Accra stopped a green pickup truck carrying three passengers in its open bucket.
Two of the men suddenly jumped down, shouting for help, while the third tried to restrain them.
The distressed men told officers they had been attacked after armed assailants hijacked their fuel tanker (registration GT 2493–20) near Nsawam the previous night.
As the victims explained their ordeal, the driver of the pickup sped off, abandoning one passenger, who was captured after a brief chase.
The two victims — both tanker drivers from Tema — recounted that after the hijacking, they were handcuffed and transported in the pickup until the police intervention.
Following further intelligence, the Kibi Divisional Police moved in on Asikwa Junction near Bunso, arresting six more suspects.
At the scene, officers recovered the stolen tanker along with another tanker (registration GN 804–13) and a pumping machine believed to have been used to siphon the fuel.
A VW Golf (GW 5185–Z) linked to the suspects was also impounded.
All exhibits are in police custody.
The suspects remain in detention and are expected to be arraigned soon.
