Economic Fighters League condemns high UG accommodation fees
The Students Command of the Economic Fighters League (EFL) issued a statement on Saturday, May 9, condemning the high cost of student accommodation at the University of Ghana, Legon.
The group expressed support for Mr Frederick Opoku and the Rent Control Department in their efforts to address a housing market they describe as rigged against the average student.
According to the EFL, private hostel operators are charging up to GH₵24,000 for single rooms and GH₵10,000 per person for shared rooms.
The group characterizes these rates as a social crisis rather than a simple market trend, arguing that such costs threaten to make higher education accessible only to the wealthy.
They warned that these financial pressures could lead to mass dropouts or force students into substandard living conditions.
While the EFL commended Mr Opoku’s public stance, they stressed that verbal condemnation is insufficient.
The group is calling on the government to provide the Rent Control Department with the regulatory power to enforce price caps and penalize profiteering.
The statement concludes by noting that if the government does not intervene against these predatory charges, the EFL may mobilize students to demand affordable housing through direct action.
