Education Minister briefs Parliamentary Select Committee on strides in sector

Minister for Education, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, has joined the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education for a week-long mid-year review session to assess the performance and challenges of all agencies under the Ministry, from Kindergarten to Higher Education.
The review, which forms part of statutory oversight mechanisms, saw key institutions within the sector presenting progress reports and outlining critical challenges impeding their operations.
Addressing the Committee, Mr. Iddrisu provided a comprehensive overview of the state of Ghana’s education system.
He highlighted significant achievements in expanding access to education, improving school infrastructure, enhancing teacher development, and promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) programmes.
He also emphasised the Ministry’s commitment to aligning educational outcomes with Ghana’s broader national development agenda.
“These sessions are not just a statutory exercise — they are an opportunity to strengthen our shared resolve in delivering quality education for every Ghanaian child,” the Minister noted.
In a related development, Mr. Iddrisu paid a visit to Oyoko Methodist Senior High School in the Eastern Region following a fire outbreak that occurred on Monday night.
The blaze caused damage to some school facilities, prompting swift intervention from the Ministry.
The Minister met with school authorities, inspected the affected areas, and assured the school of immediate government support to address the damage.
“We are working with relevant agencies to assess the full extent of the damage and respond accordingly. The safety and welfare of our students remain a top priority,” he said.
Reaffirming the government’s dedication to education, the Minister said, “Education is the bedrock of Ghana’s future, and we will continue to lead with purpose, compassion, and strategic focus.”
The mid-year review continues this week, with stakeholders optimistic that the outcomes will help address pressing issues and improve educational delivery across the country.
