The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced plans to establish a new College of Education in the Jomoro Municipality of the Western Region to expand access to teacher training.

The proposed institution, to be located at Ezinlibo, is expected to serve communities across the Western corridor and improve the training of teachers in underserved areas.

Mr. Iddrisu disclosed the plan on Wednesday during the inauguration of the Committee for the Establishment of New Public Universities at the Ministry of Education Ghana.

He was supported at the event by the Deputy Minister for Education, Clement Abas Apaak.

According to the Minister, government is exploring partnerships to facilitate the project, with the Ghana National Gas Company expressing interest in supporting its development.

Beyond the new college, Mr. Iddrisu tasked the committee to ensure that the establishment of public universities across the country aligns with national development needs and labour market demands.

He reiterated government’s vision of ensuring that each region in Ghana has at least one public university to broaden access to higher education.

The Minister emphasised that future institutions must prioritise research, innovation, and relevance to Ghana’s workforce needs, stressing that expansion should be guided by clear development-oriented principles.

Chairperson of the committee, Christine Amoako-Nuamah, described the assignment as both timely and ambitious, noting that the committee is committed to ensuring quality and sustainability in all new institutions.

She added that the success of the initiative would be measured not by the number of institutions established, but by their relevance, impact, and alignment with national priorities such as science, agriculture, and entrepreneurship.
