University Staff Unions declare indefinite strike over unpaid allowances and altered conditions of service
The Senior Staff Association-Universities of Ghana (SSA-UOG) and other labour unions have announced an indefinite strike effective immediately.
According to Harruna Rafik, the Chairman of Senior Staff Association-Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), the unions are protesting the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission's (FWSC) unilateral decision to alter their Conditions of Service and the government's failure to pay arrears of salaries and allowances.
Key Demands:
- Withdrawal of FWSC's letter instructing universities to stop paying overtime allowance
- Payment of arrears of salaries and allowances for staff of National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI), Ghana Institute of Languages (GIL), and Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ)
- Payment of five months' tier two contributions to fund managers
- Payment of 3% penalty for delayed remittance of contributions [1][2]
The unions claim that the FWSC's decision to alter their Conditions of Service is a breach of trust and a betrayal of the agreement signed in 2021.
They also accuse the government of failing to respond to their letters and ignoring their concerns.
The strike is expected to affect academic activities in public universities, including the University of Ghana, the University of Health and Allied Sciences, and the University for Development Studies.
