W/R:Akufo-Addo's statue vandalized at Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital

General News
Akufo-Addo 's statute vandalized

In the early hours of Monday, January 13, 2025, the statue of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, located at the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi municipality of the Western Region, was destroyed in an act of apparent vandalism.

According to police reports, the incident occurred around 1:30 a.m., and by the time authorities arrived, the damage was extensive.

The statue had been completely toppled, with its head and lower body severely damaged, rendering it irreparable.

The statue, unveiled on November 6, 2024, in recognition of the former president, has been a source of controversy since its installation.

Many residents have questioned the decision to erect the monument, citing more pressing developmental needs in the region.

This is not the first time the statue has faced damage.

In December 2024, it required repairs after a hole was discovered in the back of its left leg.

On December 18, a team of workers conducted the restoration under police supervision, but this effort did little to quell public dissatisfaction.

The repeated damage has fueled speculation among residents that the vandalism reflects broader discontent with the statue’s presence.

Some locals view the destruction as symbolic of opposition to the priorities it represents.

Authorities have launched an investigation to identify the perpetrators, but no arrests have been made thus far.

The police are urging the public to provide any information that could assist in resolving the case.
