Council of State member engages CEANA on cancer research centre proposal in Volta Region
The Volta Regional representative on the Council of State, Gabriel Tanko Kwamigah-Atokple, has held talks with the President of the Council of Ewe Associations North America (CEANA), William Edem Kumah, following a courtesy call focused on development and healthcare advancement in the Volta Region.
The meeting, described as warm and productive, centred on key issues including infrastructure development, healthcare delivery and the future of cancer treatment in the region.
Mr. Kumah highlighted CEANA’s contributions over the past 25 years and raised concerns about the lack of a strong maintenance culture in many institutions, calling for a shift toward sustainable management of public infrastructure.
A major highlight of the discussions was CEANA’s proposal to partner with the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ho to establish a modern cancer research centre.
The facility is expected to focus on studying cancer types prevalent in West Africa and advancing treatment solutions, potentially transforming healthcare delivery and medical research in the sub-region.
Mr. Kumah, a specialist in cancer research and treatment, also expressed concern over the absence of Linear Accelerator (LINAC) machines in Ghana—technology widely used globally in cancer treatment—describing the situation as a major gap in the country’s healthcare system.
He noted that the proposed research centre would serve as a legacy project for CEANA in the Volta Region and appealed for support to bring the vision to fruition.
In response, Mr. Kwamigah-Atokple assured the delegation of his full backing for the initiative and pledged to engage corporate institutions and international development partners to mobilise resources for the project.
He also used the occasion to fulfil a prior pledge made to CEANA during its 2026 launch in Ho, where he served as Special Guest of Honour.
The Council of State member further expressed his intention to participate in CEANA’s upcoming conference scheduled for September in Maryland, United States, as efforts continue to strengthen collaboration in advancing healthcare, research and development in the region.
