FDA investigates alleged use of chemicals to ripen plantain at Madina Market
The Food & Drugs Authority (FDA) says it has launched investigations into a video circulating on social media alleging that a chemical substance was used to accelerate the ripening of plantain at the Madina Market in Accra.
According to the FDA, the investigations were initiated in collaboration with the Environmental Health Unit of the La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly.
The FDA said its investigations involved engagements with traders at the market as well as the individual featured in the video to establish the veracity of the claims.
The authority issued the caution in a public notice dated August 17, 2026, as part of its mandate to protect public health and safety.
