The government is planning a major redevelopment of the informal settlement along the Korle Lagoon in Accra, with high-rise container housing proposed as part of efforts to tackle the area’s sanitation and public health challenges.

Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, disclosed the plan during a visit to the area, where authorities are preparing to clear the existing dumpsite and relocate the accumulated waste.

The clearing exercise is expected to be led by the military, after which the waste will be transported to the Adepa Waste Management Centre at Nsawam for disposal.

Mr Ayariga said the redevelopment would also include the dredging of the Korle Lagoon to improve its condition and address the persistent environmental problems associated with the area.

He acknowledged that the planned clearance could face resistance from some residents but expressed confidence that the majority of the public would support the exercise.

“Those of us who want to clear it in Accra here, we are far more than those who want to resist clearing the mess,” he said.

The proposed redevelopment forms part of broader efforts by the government to restore the Korle Lagoon area, improve sanitation and create healthier living conditions for residents.

Authorities are expected to commence the clearance and related preparatory works before the proposed redevelopment begins.
