The Pharmaceutical Importers and Wholesalers Association (PIWA) has launched activities to commemorate its 10th anniversary, highlighting its contribution to Ghana’s healthcare system while calling for stronger collaboration to strengthen the country’s pharmaceutical sector.

The anniversary launch, held in Accra on Thursday, July 2026, was under the theme “A Decade of Impact Through Effective Collaboration.”

Addressing members and stakeholders, PIWA President, Pharm. Dr William Adum Addo, described the milestone as a celebration of the Association’s decade-long contribution to healthcare delivery, resilience, partnerships and national development.

He noted that access to safe, effective, quality and affordable medicines remains essential to improving healthcare outcomes, stressing that a reliable pharmaceutical supply chain is critical to achieving that goal.

According to him, PIWA has played a significant role in ensuring the availability of medicines across the country through the efforts of pharmaceutical importers, wholesalers and other industry players.

Pharm Dr Adum Addo also commended the government for its collaboration with the Association over the years and appealed for continued engagement to enhance the growth and sustainability of Ghana’s pharmaceutical industry.

Established in 2016, PIWA was formed to provide a unified platform for businesses involved in the importation and wholesale distribution of pharmaceutical products in Ghana. The Association seeks to advocate for the interests of the industry, promote collaboration among members and engage government, regulators and other stakeholders on policies affecting the pharmaceutical sector.

The association’s first President was Pharm. Dr Samuel Kow Donkoh, who served from 2016 to 2020, while former Ayawaso West Wuogon Member of Parliament, Lydia Seyram Alhassan, served as its first Vice Chairperson.

Over the past decade, PIWA has grown into a key stakeholder in Ghana’s pharmaceutical industry, championing professionalism, ethical business practices and regulatory compliance. The Association has also contributed to policy reforms, capacity-building initiatives and public-private partnerships aimed at strengthening the country’s pharmaceutical supply chain and improving access to quality medicines.
