President Mahama to convene 90-min Geneva Clarion Call on global health financing
President John Dramani Mahama is expected to convene the “Geneva Clarion Call” today under the Accra Reset initiative as part of efforts to address challenges in global health financing and governance.
According to a statement issued on May 18, 2026, the high-level dialogue will be held at the Global Health Campus and will bring together organisations including the World Health Organization (WHO), Gavi, the Global Fund, the Pandemic Fund and the Rockefeller Foundation.
The event comes amid concerns over declining global health development assistance, which reportedly dropped by 21 percent within a year, as well as funding challenges following the United States’ withdrawal from the WHO in early 2026.
The statement said the Accra Reset initiative was launched following the Africa Health Sovereignty Summit in 2025, with the aim of promoting what it described as “practical sovereignty” in health delivery across Africa.
According to the statement, the initiative is guided by a Presidential Council comprising leaders from Brazil, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Kenya, Togo and Barbados, with support from a “Guardians’ Circle” made up of elder statesmen and women.
During the Geneva Clarion Call, the Accra Reset initiative is expected to launch three interlocking sovereign health instruments aimed at improving health delivery systems.
The 90-minute programme will feature WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Dr Vanessa Kerry and former New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark.
The event is scheduled to take place from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Central European Summer Time, which corresponds to 2:30 p.m. Ghana time.
According to the statement, the programme will be livestreamed on President Mahama’s social media platforms, the Ghana Presidency Facebook page and Africa.com, while major television networks in Ghana are also expected to broadcast the event live.
The statement further noted that Africa continues to face significant dependence on imported medical products, with the continent reportedly importing 99 percent of its vaccines and 70 percent of its medicines.
It added that the Accra Reset seeks to establish sovereign delivery systems aimed at reducing dependency and addressing implementation challenges within the health sector.
The statement was signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications.
