The donation of three Freightliner truck heads by the United States government to the Ghana Armed Forces was prompted by transportation challenges encountered during the movement of heavy engineering equipment used for military training.

The Commanding Officer of the Engineer Training School (ETS), Lieutenant Colonel Ampadu Banasco, disclosed this during a handover ceremony at the school's premises in Teshie, Accra.

According to him, the Engineer Training School has benefited from years of cooperation with the United States, including the donation of heavy engineering equipment and training support for instructors.

He explained that in 2022, some of the equipment had to be transported to Akuse for practical training exercises, exposing difficulties associated with moving the machinery from one location to another.

The experience, he said, informed the decision by the United States government to provide the three Freightliner truck heads to improve the school's transportation capacity.

Lt Col Banasco noted that the vehicles are expected to support the movement of heavy engineering equipment for training and operational activities, while enhancing the efficiency of programmes conducted by the school.

He revealed that the Engineer Training School launched its first Basic Heavy Engineering Equipment Course in January 2026, with trainees undertaking practical sessions at Weija Barracks and later at the Akuse camp before completing the programme in May.

According to him, some graduates of the course are currently serving as plant operators on the Accra-Kumasi Expressway project under the government's Big Push infrastructure programme.

He further disclosed that a second batch of trainees is currently undergoing the programme and is expected to complete training in September 2026.

Lt Col Banasco expressed confidence that the donated trucks would strengthen future training exercises and improve the professional development of military personnel in heavy equipment operations.

He assured the donors that the vehicles would be used responsibly and maintained to support the training mission of the school.

The donation forms part of ongoing military cooperation between Ghana and the United States aimed at strengthening engineering capabilities and operational readiness within the Ghana Armed Forces.
