Vice President calls for probe into Accra Central Market fire, demands stronger safety measures
The Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has called for a comprehensive investigation into the fire outbreak at the Accra Central Market in the Greater Accra Region, urging authorities to determine the cause of the incident and strengthen safety systems to prevent future occurrences.
She emphasized the need for a thorough assessment of what led to the fire, noting that lessons from the incident must be used to improve enforcement of safety regulations and protect lives and property in major trading centres across the country.
According to her, the recurrence of fire outbreaks in markets highlights the importance of stricter compliance with safety standards, improved emergency preparedness, and sustained public education for traders and market authorities.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang stressed that government remains committed to supporting affected traders and ensuring that appropriate measures are taken to rebuild confidence and enhance resilience within the country’s commercial hubs.
She further called on relevant agencies to work collaboratively in addressing the root causes of such incidents and implementing long-term preventive strategies to safeguard critical economic infrastructure.
