Broadcast journalist and community advocate Samuel Kojo Brace, popularly known as Ahanta Pele, has declared his intention to contest the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries in the Ahanta West Constituency ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The declaration now places Mr. Brace among those seeking the NPP’s parliamentary nomination in Ahanta West, with the eventual winner of the party’s primary expected to represent the NPP in the constituency at the 2028 general elections.

His decision to enter the political arena follows a series of community engagements in Ahanta West, putting an end months of speculation about his political future.

In September, he organised the “Walk with Ahanta Pele” health and fitness event in Agona Nkwanta, which attracted residents and participants from other parts of the country including NPP constituency executives were also present. 

Declaring his intention at a press conference, Mr. Brace said the NPP’s contribution to Ghana’s development remains significant, citing policies such as free maternal healthcare and the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme as notable interventions whose impact, he argued, remains unmatched. 

“I am proud to belong to the NPP and I would work with other NPP members and supporters across the country as part of efforts towards the party’s 2028 campaign” he declared.

He added that his political ambition had been shaped by more than a decade of community engagement and service to the people of Ahanta West.

He claimed that individuals from different political backgrounds, including members of the NDC, CPP and politically unaffiliated residents, had encouraged him to consider entering politics.

According to him, the message from these individuals has been that his longstanding commitment to the development of the area should take precedence over partisan considerations.

Mr. Brace linked his political motivation partly to his experience as a student leader at the University of Cape Coast, where he served as president of the Ahanta Students Association for two terms.

He recalled that poverty was a recurring concern among students and said his administration established a fund to assist students who were unable to pay their school fees.

According to him, the experience exposed him to the challenges faced by ordinary people and strengthened his conviction that poverty reduction must be central to his public service agenda.

He also expressed support for NPP flagbearer Mahamudu Bawumia, praising his role in initiatives including the Gold-for-Oil programme and the domestic gold purchase programme.
