Dr. Razak Kojo Opoku, founder of the UP Tradition Institute, has raised a series of pointed questions to the Head of the New Patriotic Party's Economic Management Team (EMT)  as leadership begins engagements with delegates in the Ashanti Region ahead of the January 31, 2026, flagbearership contest.

In a strongly worded statement, Dr. Opoku accused the EMT, led by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, of neglecting the Ashanti Region despite the region’s overwhelming electoral support for the NPP over the past eight years.

He listed several unfulfilled promises and stalled projects, including:

The Krofrom Market

The Afari Military Hospital

The Komfo Anokye Maternity and Children’s Block (ongoing for 44 years)

The Kejetia Market Phase II Project

The Boankra Inland Port

He also lamented the absence of a single completed interchange or major legacy project in the Ashanti Region, describing the situation as an “embarrassing neglect.”

On the economic front, Dr. Opoku criticised the government for the sharp depreciation of the cedi, with the exchange rate hitting $1 to GH₵17, high inflation that has eroded purchasing power, and the controversial Domestic Debt Exchange programme, which he said unfairly imposed a “haircut” on pensioners, traders, and investors.

Looking ahead, he challenged party delegates to press the EMT and NPP leadership on timelines for key infrastructure projects, including:

Anloga Junction, Bekwai Roundabout, and Santasi interchanges (yet to start)

Suame Interchange, Sofoline Interchange, Kumasi-Sunyani Road, and the Accra-Kumasi Road (pending completion)

At the party level, Dr. Opoku further questioned when the NPP would establish a befitting regional headquarters in Ashanti and a modern national secretariat, insisting that internal party infrastructure must reflect the party’s stature.

He concluded by urging NPP delegates not to remain “blind and quiet” in the face of these realities, but rather to demand accountability from leadership as the party prepares for a crucial election year.
