ECOWAS Council of Ministers endorse John Mahama as sole candidate for AU chair in 2027
The ECOWAS Council of Ministers has unanimously endorsed President John Dramani Mahama as the sub-region’s sole candidate for the position of Chairperson of the African Union (AU) when the rotating leadership returns to West Africa in 2027.
The endorsement was announced during the Council’s meeting in Abuja, setting the stage for formal adoption by the Authority of Heads of State and Government when they convene on Sunday.
Ghana’s delegation, led by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudjeto-Ablakwa, expressed deep appreciation for the confidence reposed in the President.
“Ghana is exceedingly grateful to ECOWAS for the support shown to our beloved visionary and Pan-African President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama.
Ghana shall keep making Africa proud,” a statement from the Ministry noted.
If confirmed by the Heads of State, Mahama will represent ECOWAS in the continental race, strengthening West Africa’s bid for the AU’s top leadership position in 2027.![]()
