Ghana's embassy in Washington reopens today after closure over corruption concerns

Ghana’s Embassy in Washington, D.C. is scheduled to reopen this Thursday following a temporary shutdown prompted by investigations into alleged corruption, the Foreign Affairs Ministry has announced.
The closure, which drew national and international attention, was part of a bold move by the Minister for Foreign Affairs aimed at rooting out malpractice and restoring professionalism in Ghana’s diplomatic operations abroad.
Addressing the media, Alfred Okoe Vanderpuye, Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South and a leading voice on the Foreign Affairs Committee, praised the Minister’s swift and decisive action.
“We commend the Foreign Minister for taking the bold step to suspend the operations of the embassy while addressing the misconduct.
This sends a strong message about our government's zero-tolerance for corruption, even in our foreign missions,” Mr. Vanderpuye said.
According to officials, the embassy will resume full operations under a new agenda that emphasises integrity, accountability, and service excellence.
Measures have been implemented to tighten oversight, streamline operations, and prevent future abuses.
The Majority Caucus of the Foreign Affairs Committee emphasised that the reopening reflects the government’s firm commitment to transparency and good governance.
“The embassy’s revival is not just about restoring operations—it’s about resetting standards and rebuilding trust with Ghanaians abroad and international partners,” the Committee noted.
