Majority Leader withdraws Special Prosecutor repeal Bill after President Mahama’s appeal
The Majority Leader in Parliament, Mr. Mahama Ayariga, has announced that he will review and possibly withdraw his private member’s bill seeking to repeal the Office of the Special Prosecutor, following a request from President John Dramani Mahama.
Mr Ayariga made the disclosure after Deputy Minority Whip, Habib Idris, sought clarification on the fate of the bill in light of the President’s intervention.
He explained that the proposal, co-sponsored by the Majority Chief Whip and already approved by the Private Members’ Committee, had been progressing until President Mahama appealed for its withdrawal.
The Majority Leader said he chose to suspend further action on the bill out of respect for the President’s judgment, noting that thoughtful collaboration was necessary to identify the best path forward.
“Two heads are better than one,” Mr Ayariga remarked, expressing readiness to work with President Mahama to explore alternative reforms.
He assured Parliament that the decision was taken in good faith and in recognition of the President’s counsel.
