Tensions rose within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Bunkpurugu Constituency on Sunday, May 10, 2026, following attempts to hold polling station elections despite a court order.

The High Court in Nalerigu had issued an interim injunction last Friday after 17 applicants challenged the process, alleging violations of party rules.

Justice Samuel Bright Acquah ruled that the elections, originally scheduled for May 10 to May 15, must be suspended.

The judge stated that proceeding could cause "irreparable, irreversible, or irredeemable damage" to the plaintiffs and undermine any future court decision.

Police Intervention and Security Measures

Despite the legal order being served and reported, some executives allegedly tried to begin the elections on Sunday.

This led to protests and forced the police to intervene.

Armed officers were deployed to locations including the Lutheran Church in Bunkpurugu and a station in Bimbagu, where they confiscated ballot papers and election materials.

The District Police Commander warned party members that anyone defying the court order would face arrest.

Response from Constituency Leadership

Constituency Chairman Thomas Elisha characterised the situation as unfortunate and took responsibility for the lack of communication.

He explained that although he received the injunction on Friday evening, he failed to notify the election committee because he was attending a funeral the following day.

Chairman Elisha has now called for calm and directed the election committee and all members to suspend activities immediately.

He stated that he must officially meet with the committee to ensure everyone understands the legal situation.

The applicants involved in the court case have also called for calm but insist on strict adherence to the law while the case remains in court.
