The New Patriotic Party's (NPP) Director of Legal Affairs, Gary Nimako Marfo, has questioned who will bear the cost of internal party elections following the Supreme Court's decision introducing a "one member, one vote" system.

Speaking to journalists outside the Supreme Court after the ruling on Wednesday, July 29, Mr Nimako Marfo expressed concern about the financial implications of the judgment.

"Who is going to pay for the cost of the election?" he asked.

When journalists suggested that the political parties themselves would foot the bill, he responded: "The political parties?"

During the brief exchange, he indicated he was interested in the detailed reasoning behind the court's decision to scrap the delegates system.

"Let's wait and see," he said, before walking away.

The Supreme Court, in a 5–2 majority decision, ruled that all registered members in good standing of political parties must be allowed to vote in the election of their party leaders and candidates, effectively ending the delegate system that has long been used by Ghana's major political parties.

The ruling is expected to significantly change the conduct of internal elections within political parties, with attention now turning to how the new voting system will be implemented and financed.
