The Ghana Police Service has launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of a key suspect linked to the murder and disappearance of two youths at Kandeu in the Upper West Region. 

The suspect, identified as Abu Tijani, also known as Master One, died on Saturday, July 25, 2026, after he was arrested in connection with the case. 

In a statement issued by the Upper West Regional Police Command on Tuesday, July 28, the Police said the 35-year-old, who was the youth leader of Wechau, had been on the wanted list after allegedly escaping arrest on May 11, 2026, and going into hiding. 

According to the Police, efforts had been made through the Paramount Chief of Wechau and his elders for Abu Tijani to report and assist with investigations into the killing of the two youths on November 23, 2025.

The Police said the suspect resisted arrest when he was apprehended through intelligence, injuring two officers before he was overpowered and arrested. 

During interrogation, Abu Tijani allegedly admitted involvement in the crime and told investigators that the bodies of the two victims were initially buried at a location in Wechau before they were later exhumed and reburied across the Black Volta River in Burkina Faso to evade detection.

The Police said the suspect later led investigators to the initial burial site, located about three kilometers west of Wechau towards the Black River. 

However, no remains were found after the search as he explained that the bodies had been moved days after the initial burial. 

The Police added that while being escorted to identify one of his alleged accomplices along the Nakore Road, the suspect complained of a severe headache. 

Officers immediately abandoned the operation and transported him to the Seventh-day Adventist Hospital in Wa where he was admitted at about 1:00 p.m. 

Despite efforts by medical personnel, Abu Tijani was pronounced dead at about 4:37 p.m. 

His body has since been deposited at the Upper West Regional Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy. 

The Upper West Regional Police Command said it has informed the family of the deceased through the Paramount Chief of Wechau and has commenced investigations through the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) to establish the circumstances surrounding his death. 

The Police have appealed to residents of Wechau to remain calm, avoid speculation, and cooperate with investigators as the probe continues.
