Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Acting Chief Justice

President John Dramani Mahama will today at 2 pm, Monday, November 17, 2025, officially swear in Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice, following Parliament’s decisive approval of his nomination last week.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s confirmation saw 163 Members of Parliament voting in favour, while 69 opposed his appointment to succeed Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, who was suspended and subsequently removed from office earlier this year.

He has served as Acting Chief Justice since April 22, 2025.

Nominated on September 23, 2025, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has been widely commended for his remarkable judicial career, having risen through the ranks from the High Court to the Court of Appeal and ultimately the Supreme Court.

Appearing before the Appointments Committee on November 10, he pledged to lead an accessible, inclusive, and transparent judiciary.

He further assured the nation of his commitment to upholding judicial independence and enhancing the efficiency of justice delivery.

Today’s swearing-in ceremony marks the beginning of a new chapter for Ghana’s judiciary under his leadership.
