The Energy Commission of Ghana has held a project preparatory meeting with a delegation from Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) to advance discussions on the “Mobilize Net-Zero II” initiative, aimed at accelerating the decarbonisation of Ghana’s domestic transport sector.

The GIZ delegation, led by Gunnar Wegner, was received by the Acting Executive Secretary of the Commission, Adwoa Serwaa Bondzie, alongside Board Chairman John Gartchie Gatsi and Deputy Executive Secretary Chris Nanabanyin Yalley.

Members of the Commission’s technical team also participated in the discussions.

The initiative forms part of Ghana’s efforts to meet its commitments under the Paris Agreement through its Nationally Determined Contributions (GH-NDC).

It focuses on promoting Electric Vehicles (EVs) and e-mobility solutions, mobilising climate finance, and integrating gender-responsive approaches within the transport sector.

During the meeting, Ms. Bondzie highlighted the importance of strong coordination to ensure grid readiness, reliable charging infrastructure, and sustainable growth of electric mobility in Ghana.

She also outlined ongoing efforts by the Commission to develop regulatory frameworks for EV charging infrastructure and battery swapping systems.

Participants further explored key areas including the integration of renewable energy into EV charging systems, innovative financing models to attract private investment, capacity-building for local stakeholders, and opportunities for green job creation.

The “Mobilize Net-Zero II” programme is part of GIZ’s broader global efforts to support countries in meeting climate targets, with Ghana identified as a key partner in advancing sustainable transport solutions in West Africa.
