The Ghana national football team are set to play a fifth international friendly as part of preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Following Ghana’s qualification for the tournament to be hosted in the United States, Canada and Mexico, the Ghana Football Association had initially scheduled four friendly matches under former head coach Otto Addo.

Addo was dismissed after consecutive defeats in March, including a 5–1 loss to Austria national football team in Vienna and a 2–1 defeat to Germany national football team in Stuttgart.

The GFA has since appointed Carlos Queiroz on a short-term deal running through the World Cup, subject to review after the tournament.

Queiroz, who has previously coached Iran national football team, Portugal national football team and Egypt national football team at major tournaments, is expected to bring structure and discipline to the squad.

Ghana’s confirmed warm-up fixtures include matches against Mexico national football team and Wales national football team in May and June respectively. However, the GFA is working to secure an additional fifth friendly to give the new coach more time to implement his tactics.

Queiroz is expected to arrive in Ghana this week for his official unveiling and will be introduced to the Minister for Sports, Kofi Adams.

He will take charge of the team’s remaining preparatory matches, starting with the game against Mexico and concluding with the fixture against Wales on June 2.

Ghana will be making their fifth World Cup appearance in Group L, opening their campaign against Panama national football team on June 17, before facing England national football team on June 23 and Croatia national football team on June 27.

Queiroz is expected to stabilise the team and improve performance following early exits at the 2014 and 2022 tournaments.
