Ghana’s newly appointed head coach, Carlos Queiroz, has stated that domestic players will have the opportunity to make the final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

While the Black Stars roster has recently been dominated by foreign-based talent — with Accra Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare being the sole domestic regular — Queiroz emphasized that selection will be based strictly on merit.

A merit-based selection process

During his official unveiling, the Portuguese manager made it clear that no player is guaranteed a position in the team regardless of where they play.

"Nobody owns the national team shirt. That must be clear," Queiroz said.

He noted that his responsibility is to provide a "fair and right opportunity" to those who deserve it, focusing on players who are "capable, fit, and experienced."

Key tournament deadlines and fixtures

Queiroz faces a tight timeline to finalize his roster for the expanded 48-team tournament:

- Squad Deadline: The final list must be submitted by June 1, 2026.

- Group Stage: Ghana has been drawn into Group L, where they will face England, Croatia, and Panama.

The Black Stars are looking to advance to the knockout stages for the first time since their quarter-final appearance in 2010.

By keeping the door open for local talent, Queiroz aims to ensure the team is composed of the most prepared players available before the tournament begins this June.
