CAS confirms receipt of Senegal appeal over stripped AFCON 2025 title
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has confirmed receipt of an appeal from the Senegalese Football Federationchallenging the decision to strip the country of its 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title.
The appeal, registered on 25 March 2026, marks the formal start of a legal process that could determine the ultimate outcome of one of Africa’s most high-profile football disputes. The case stems from a ruling by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which Senegal is seeking to overturn on grounds it considers unjust.
As part of its filing, the federation has asked CAS to suspend the deadline for submitting its detailed appeal brief until CAF provides the full reasoning behind its decision, arguing that this is necessary to ensure a fair opportunity to prepare its case.
CAS indicated that an arbitral panel will be constituted in due course to examine the matter. Once appointed, the panel will outline procedural timelines, including deadlines for submissions, possible hearings, and any mediation steps.
CAS Director General Matthieu Reeb emphasized the body’s readiness to handle the dispute, stating: “CAS is perfectly equipped to resolve this type of dispute, with the assistance of expert and independent arbitrators. We understand that teams and fans are eager to know the final decision, and we will ensure that arbitration proceedings are conducted as swiftly as possible, while respecting the right of all parties to a fair hearing.”
The development has intensified attention across the African football landscape, with stakeholders closely monitoring the process. A successful appeal could see Senegal reinstated as AFCON 2025 champions, while a dismissal would uphold CAF’s decision and potentially reinforce its disciplinary authority.
With the process still in its early stages, the timeline for a final ruling remains uncertain. However, the outcome is expected to have significant implications—not only for the title in question but also for how future disputes in African football are contested and resolved.
