Newly appointed Ghana national football team head coach Carlos Queiroz is expected to arrive in Ghana with five members of his backroom staff as preparations intensify ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 73-year-old, who has signed a short-term deal with the four-time African champions, takes over following the dismissal of Otto Addo after consecutive friendly defeats to Austria national football team and Germany national football team in March.

His arrival is expected to trigger a restructuring of the technical team. Reports indicate that Winfried Schäfer, technical advisor and director of football at the Ghana Football Association, has been relieved of his duties, while high-performance coach John Paintsil has also been dismissed.

Additional members of the existing technical team are also expected to step aside to make room for the incoming staff.

Queiroz is scheduled to arrive in the country this week for his official unveiling, after which he will be formally introduced to the Minister for Sports, Kofi Adams, as part of official protocol.

He will then turn attention to Ghana’s preparatory matches against Mexico national football team and Wales national football team on June 2 as part of final build-up to the tournament.

Ghana, drawn in Group L, will open their World Cup campaign against Panama national football team on June 17, before facing England national football team on June 23 and Croatia national football team on June 27.

With previous experience leading South Africa national football team to qualification for the 2002 tournament, guiding Portugal national football team to the knockout stage in 2010, and managing Iran national football team at the 2014 and 2018 editions, Queiroz is expected to bring structure and stability to the Black Stars.
