Ghana Volleyball Clubs shine at CAVB Zone III Championship as calls for corporate support grow
Ghana’s volleyball scene is experiencing a remarkable rise, highlighted by outstanding performances at the 2026 CAVB Zone III Volleyball Club Championship held at the Borteyman Sports Complex from March 1st to 10th.
The tournament, which brought together 32 top clubs from seven West African countries, marked a historic milestone for African club volleyball and showcased Ghana’s growing influence in the sport.
The event was a celebration of Ghanaian excellence on the court, with Ghana Army Volleyball Club clinching the men’s title after a straight-sets victory over Nigeria Customs Volleyball Club.
In the women’s division, Kalibi Volleyball Club delivered a commanding performance, defeating Vipers Volleyball Club of Nigeria 3–0 to claim the championship.
The championship attracted notable dignitaries, including Bouchra Hajij, President of the Confederation of African Volleyball, underscoring the event’s significance in the continent’s volleyball development.
The presence of Ghanaian officials such as the President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Richard Akpokavie, and the Director-General of the National Sports Authority, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, further emphasised national support for the sport.
At the closing ceremony, Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, expressed pride in the country’s progress and reiterated the government’s commitment to sports development.
“We are impressed with the exploits of Ghana volleyball.
The President’s support through the Sports Fund aims to foster sustainable growth across all sports,” he stated.
Minister Adams also called for increased corporate sponsorship and investment, emphasising that stronger club support and grassroots programmes are vital for Ghana to maintain its competitive edge and reach new heights in African and global volleyball.
With improving infrastructure, a rising pool of talented players, and successful international tournaments, Ghana is positioning itself as an emerging powerhouse in West African volleyball.
Many stakeholders believe that with enhanced corporate backing, the sport’s potential for continental and international success can be fully realised, promising a bright future for Ghanaian volleyball.
