Kyere-Duah calls for demolition, rebuilding of Accra Sports Stadium
Berekum West Member of Parliament (MP) Dickson Kyere-Duah has called for the urgent demolition and reconstruction of the Accra (Ohene Gyan) Sports Stadium, underscoring that its current condition is inadequate for future international competitions.
He said although the stadium looked impressive during floodlit matches, a closer inspection revealed deep structural and maintenance challenges.
The MP made the call after touring the facility to assess the extent of rehabilitation required ahead of Ghana’s hosting of the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
“When you come here on match days, especially matches that are played under floodlights, you see the place being so magnificent,” he said.
“But when you take a deep tour, as we've done, then you realise we have a very long way to go. We need to respond as quickly as possible.”
Kyere-Duah argued that continuing to spend on short-term repairs would not address the stadium’s long-term challenges.
He instead called for the existing facility to be pulled down and replaced with a modern stadium capable of meeting FIFA and CAF standards.
“We should be thinking about replacing this facility entirely, pulling everything down and building a modern stadium that befits the status of Ghana's capital, Accra, to host FIFA and CAF-sanctioned matches.”
Describing the situation as urgent, the MP said cosmetic improvements would not be sufficient.
“It's so terrible, and I think we need to work very, very fast.”
His comments come as Ghana prepares for upcoming international football commitments, including AFCON qualifiers and the 2027 U-20 AFCON.
