‘The pain is immense’ - Messi breaks silence after world cup final heartbreak
Four years after lifting the World Cup in Qatar, Lionel Messi and Argentina found themselves back in the final and once again, they came up short.
In a raw message shared to Instagram after Argentina’s loss to Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Final, Messi didn’t hide from the hurt.
“The pain is immense, and this wound will take time to heal,” he wrote.
It’s the kind of honesty you only get from someone who has given everything.
At 39, playing in what is likely his last World Cup final, Messi left it all on the pitch in New York New Jersey on July 19, 2026.
However, Messi refused to let one result erase the journey.
He pointed to the matches they turned around by giving it their all, moments that remain in the memories forever and the backing of an entire country that carried them there.
“Combined with this group's hard work and effort, we were brought back among the world's elite once again,” he said.
It’s hard to argue. Reaching two consecutive World Cup finals is a feat only the truly great teams manage.
Argentina did it with the same core, the same fight, and the same 10 on their back.
“It's hard to fully appreciate our achievement right now,” Messi admitted, “but this group reached two consecutive World Cup finals”.
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart for every greeting and message. Once again, we managed to unite as a country and stand together, sharing the immense pride of being Argentine.”
He further congratulated Spain on winning the championship.
“I also want to congratulate Spain on winning the championship.”
