UDS, UG and UBIDS secure wins in Day 1 of Honda Football Championship 2026
Day 1 of the Honda Football Championship 2026 delivered excitement, drama, and early statements as teams in Group A and Group B battled it out under the lights in a thrilling opening round of fixtures.
The first game saw University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS) take on the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) in a tightly contested encounter. UBIDS struck first in the 22nd minute through their number 6, Wale Isaac, who calmly found the back of the net. Just three minutes later, UMaT responded, with number 10 Miracle Boakye scoring the equalizer in the 25th minute. With no further goals in regulation time, the match was decided on penalties, where UBIDS held their nerve to secure a 3–1 victory over UMaT.
In the second fixture, the University of Ghana (UG) put in a composed and clinical performance against Tamale Technical University (TaTU), securing a solid 2–0 win. UG opened the scoring in the 38th minute through Baqi Abdul Wahab, who wore the number 21 jersey. Moments later, Sefa New John, wearing number 10, doubled the lead in the 41st minute. With a comfortable advantage, UG switched to a disciplined defensive approach in the second half to see out the victory.
The final game of the DAY 1 between the University of Development Studies (UDS) and Bolgatanga Technical University (BTU) was another closely fought contest. BTU took the lead early, with Salifu Zida Nafiu finding the net in the 13th minute. However, UDS responded just before halftime, as Adongo Emmanuel equalized in the 39th minute. With the match ending level after regulation time, penalties once again decided the outcome. UDS emerged victorious, winning 4–2 in the shootout.

With thrilling matches, decisive penalty shootouts, and standout individual performances, Day 1 has set the stage for an exciting Championship as teams look to build momentum in the days ahead.
DAY 2, Wednesday 25th March will feature the following games: Tamale Technical University (TaTU) vs University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS), University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) vs University of Ghana (UG), Bolgatanga Technical University (BTU) and University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) and University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) vs University of Development Studies (UDS)
